The activities which are heavily subsidised by the EU have provided our students with cultural experiences on both sides of the channel with the opportunity of visiting places of educational and historical interest including the Plumpton College, Royal Pavillion, Seven Sisters, Blacklands Farm, Natural History and Science Museums, London Eye, River trip on Thames, 2012 Olympic site, Emirates Stadium in England and Rouen Cathedral, Etretat Cliffs, EANA sustainable development park, Science Museum, Bateaux Mouche, Eiffel Tower, Montmatre and Stade de France. At the end of each exchange, students have worked together to produce a joint DVD, powerpoint or brochure making use of their entrepreneurialism and enterprise skills with the opportunity for linguists to improve their languages. The project has provided for a network of education providers across Brighton & Hove working together to offer an exciting and innovative range of educational activities to help thousands of young people both in England and France to:

Improve their language skills
Improve their enterprise skills
Practice entrepreneurialism
Become qualified for the global knowledge economy
Enhance their employability
Have a global understanding of environmental sustainability
Practise a more ecological lifestyle

Hove Park School are leading in the planning and preparation of the next phase of the project for the academic year 2009/2010.

Language Collegehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16141435601331438100noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36831643.post-86911635171350958182009-04-01T04:33:00.000-07:002009-04-01T04:57:08.360-07:00Interreg IVA updateHaving been awarded 1.2 million Euros by the EU in early October 2008 Hove Park is working with four local educational institutions; Blatchington Mill, Falmer, Varndean and City College and three French partners Lycée Les Bruyères, Collège Delvincourt and Lycée Georges Baptiste.

The overall aim of the Interreg IVA project is to support strategic cross-border co-operation and sustainable regional development by forging closer links between educational providers in Brighton and Hove and Haute-Normandie in France.

In Brighton and Hove, the lead partner of the Joint Educational Futures project is Hove Park School and in Seine Maritime the network of schools will be led by the Rectorat of the Rouen Academie in the region of Haute – Normandie.
The project will initially run from October 2008 – December 2010. So far three successful exchanges between the partner schools have taken place.

Falmer High School with Collège Delvincourt,
December 08.
The educational rationale of the project was the Economic and Cultural impact of Tourism. Students gained a huge amount of first hand knowledge and understanding of the tourist industry through the whole experience, e.g. group travel, hotel services, tourist venues, customer service and advertising. Both groups worked in each others schools, creating a website of the work they had done together which included their studies both in London and Paris.

Hove Park School and Blatchington Mill School with Lycée Les Bruyères, December 08.
The educational rationale of this student exchange was to use Business Studies to compare the commercial aspects of Christmas in both England and France. Pupils visited Brighton, Rouen, London and Paris to gather their information and then worked jointly in both schools to produce a Powerpoint. A DVD has been produced showcasing the work done and experience gained in England and France.

City College and Lycée George Baptiste, January 09.
This exchange focused on the theme of entrepreneurialism and enterprise with students investigating cultural differences between French and English cuisine and gastronomy. All the students worked together both in Brighton and Rouen, preparing a Gala dinner which was served to the public from the Gallery Restaurant at City College. Educational visits made included an organic farm and vineyard near Brighton and to a Cheese factory and bakery near Rouen.

Melanie Davies

Hove Parkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09688030328436314857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36831643.post-39314168448700543992008-05-08T06:01:00.000-07:002008-10-06T07:22:06.403-07:00Dieppe trip, year 10
A group of Yr 10 students studying French Applied GCSE (Leisure and Tourism) and French NVQ visited Dieppe and our partner school ‘Collège Delvincourt’ to participate in activities that supported the required learning for their course. To practice speaking and collect materials for written coursework the benefited in particular from a visit arranged by Collège Delvincourt to the brand new Centre Aquatique et Thalasso in Dieppe. They interviewed staff at their Hotel and asked crew on the Transmanche Ferry to complete questionnaires. The players discussed there lifestyle to our students in French and presented a prize of two Seagull match tickets to Nathan Etheridge who recently won a competition held by Brighton and Hove Albion to mark the European Day of Languages back in September.

Le HAC and the Albion are partners in a European Interreg3a project to promote education through sport. Recently the Government responded to a parliamentary question about the steep decline in students taking languages after the age of 14 in England’s schools. Nationally the figure has dropped to less than 50%. Not at Hove Park School where 90% still study a language after the age of 14 with Chinese Mandarin being introduced into the curriculum.

Hove Parkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09688030328436314857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36831643.post-14706985636407210172008-05-08T05:23:00.001-07:002008-05-08T05:23:48.079-07:00Delvincourt

Hove Parkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09688030328436314857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36831643.post-46670723088933111292008-05-08T05:18:00.000-07:002008-05-21T02:26:30.093-07:00Conseil des collegiensIn July 2007 Hove Park School helped to organise a Franco-British School Council Summit between the Brighton and Hove City School Council and its sister organization in Seine-Maritime. In the grandiose surrounding of the council chamber in Brighton Town Hall and in presence of the City’s Mayor, the French school council delegates aged 13-15 presented a DVD-film, sub-titled in English, introducing their region of Normandy.

A lively debate followed on the role of school councils on both sides of the Channel and what common issues the students faced despite living in two very different countries. A vote unanimously passed to continue these meetings and now plans are underway to develop a cross-channel school council project under the new Interreg IV programme. Brighton and Hove school councilors said they would very much like to develop a web-site that emulated the one that serves their French counterparts. http://www.collegiens76.net/

Hove Parkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09688030328436314857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36831643.post-1162218106543557862006-10-30T06:20:00.001-08:002006-10-30T06:23:10.383-08:00Lycée Les Bruyères, 2005/06The collaboration between Lycée Les Bruyères, Rouen and Hove Park School has been much more ‘vocational’. The original focus of the cooperation centered around Business Studies in the fields of Fashion and Retail. Hove Park Students produced a Fashion Show based on their acquired knowledge of the French fashion industry and exchanged a video of it with students in Rouen.
French students visited England in March 2006 comparing town centre and retail park shipping centres. This involved visits to the Marina retail complex and the Churchill Square Shopping Centre where they were able to interview the Centre’s Deputy General Manager on the success, business rationale and future of the shopping centre. French students also used Hove Park counterpart as customer focus groups to find out shopping habits of young people in Brighton and Hove.

Hove Parkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09688030328436314857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36831643.post-1162217944889256052006-10-30T06:17:00.000-08:002006-10-30T06:19:04.893-08:00Lycée Les Bruyères 2006/07
The Business Studies project is set to continue with pre-Christmas visits to France and England to compare how large stores in city centres prepare for Christmas in order to make the maximum amount of sales.

Importantly, like the other projects, the initial project is generating further cooperation between the two schools. Lycée Les Bruyères teaches elements of Humanites (Geography and History) and Science through English in its ‘Classes Européennes’ .
